But consider for a moment you saw the lady on the subway while traveling to Paris. Students from a university in New York went to the commuter stations and interviewed commuters. They found that on average, commuters knew 4 familiar strangers but had only talked to 1. Commuters said they have a fantasy relationship with familiar strangers, trying to figure out what kind of lives they lead, what their jobs are, etc. This phenomenon is explained as a response to the overload of inputs from the environment — perceptual processing takes considerably less time than social processing. Berkeley is doing a study called the Familiar Stranger Project , which is worth taking a look at. An Aspect of Urban Anonymity. However, I found this one to be more entertaining than educational.

This spring in the sophomore-level course I teach on “Communication and Society,” we spent several weeks examining the many ways that individuals and groups are using the internet to alter the nature of community, civic engagement, and social relationships. For many college students who grew up “online,” it’s easy to take for granted the “virtual” society we live in, seldom pausing to consider how it might be different from more traditional forms of community life.
Therefore, one of the goals of the course was to encourage students to think systematically and rigorously about the many changes introduced by the internet over the past decade. From political blogs to Facebook, students were introduced to the latest scholarship in the area, grouped into opposing teams, and then asked to research and write evidence-based position papers on the topic. This week, after turning in their papers, the teams squared off in a “face-to-face” class debate.
But now things get really interesting. Below the fold, I have posted the opposing teams’ position papers. Until Tuesday, May 1, they will continue their classroom debate in the comment section of the blog. In the other blog pane , CyberOptimists square off against CyberSkeptics. Each individual student will be evaluated on the frequency and quality of their posts, drawing on research and evidence to back up their claims. At issue is the following:
A recent survey from found that the number of confidants has dropped to 2. In other words, Americans have lost on average one friend with whom they discuss important matters. With millions of users worldwide, online dating platforms strive to assert themselves as powerful tools to find dates and form romantic relationships.
But if you’re ever going to get together, you have to start somewhere. Figuring out if someone likes you is the first step toward a healthy relationship. So here’s how to do that. It’s all about healthy self-esteem for yourself and respect for the other person. Ask the Right Question First Instead of wondering if someone likes you, you should first ask yourself if you really like them, says psychotherapist Elsbeth Martindale, PsyD.
Check out the person’s values — do they match yours? She wrote a book called Things to Know Before You say “Go” for her teen clients who were getting their ‘hearts stomped on,” she says. Remember, this should be fun.
But when it comes to our dates, why are we hesitant to do our homework? Homophily in online dating: When do you like someone like yourself? In: van der Veer, G, & Gale, C. (Eds.), Conference on Human Factors in Computing System. CHI ’05 extended abstracts on Human factors in computing systems.
In this context of changing and challenging market requirements, Gas Insulated Substation GIS has found a broad range of applications in power systems for more than two decades because of its high reliability, easy maintenance and small ground space requirement etc. SF6 has been of considerable technological interest as an insulation medium in GIS because of its superior insulating properties, high dielectric strength at relatively low pressure and its thermal and chemical stability.
SF6 is generally found to be very sensitive to field perturbations such as those caused by conductor surface imperfections and by conducting particle contaminants. The presence of contamination can therefore be a problem with gas insulated substations operating at high fields. If the effects of these particles could be eliminated, then this would improve the reliability of compressed gas insulated substation. It would also offer the possibility of operating at higher fields to affect a potential reduction in the GIS size with subsequent savings in the cost of manufacture and installation.
The purpose of this paper is to develop techniques, which will formulate the basic equations that will govern the movement of metallic particles like aluminum, copper in a coated as well as uncoated busduct.

Dating Online — The man with no photos Date: April 27, Author: Nor should any woman. It makes little sense. Openly putting yourself out there on a dating website when married is a very dangerous thing to do. Maybe a woman who is naive enough to think that some unseen man has nothing to hide will fall for the ruse. Or that somehow a business deal will go south because a potential client saw you on a dating website and decided you were unstable or something?
Well then what are they doing on the site in the first place? I am a psychologist and it could make my relationship with my patients strained. What kind of piece of work writes that? One man tried to send me photos privately. And I still have no idea what that was supposed to prove? I know I can come across as too blunt in written form, but I think I dodged a major bullet with that psycho!

In fact, common sense should be invoked more often in scientific discussions, where it is sometimes deficient and scorned. Scientists may string out a detailed argument that reaches an implausible conclusion contradicting common sense. But many other scientists nevertheless accept the implausible conclusion, because they get caught up in the details of the argument. I was first exposed to this fallacy when my high school teacher of plane geometry, Mr.
Bridgess, gave us students a test consisting of a step proof on which we had to comment.

Web sites for online dating allow users to post lengthy personal ads, including text and photos; search the database of users for potential romantic partners; and contact other users through a private messaging system.
This work begins with psychological and sociological perspectives on online dating and discusses the various types of online dating Web sites. Next, it presents an analysis of user behavior on one site in particular, which has more than 57, active users from the United States and Canada. A demographic description of the population is given, and then , messages exchanged by the active users over an eight-month period are analyzed. An examination of which characteristics are “bounding” finds that life course attributes such as marital status and whether one wants children are most likely to be the same across the two users in a dyadic interaction.
To understand which characteristics are important to users in deciding whom to contact, regression models show the relative strength of a variety of attributes in predicting how many messages a user with those attributes will receive. By far the strongest predictor of messages received is the number of messages sent. For men, age, educational level, and self-rated physical attractiveness are the next most important qualities.
For women, they are not being overweight, self-rated physical attractiveness, and having a photo. Finally, a discussion of the design implications of these findings and other design issues follow the results.

In short, you hang out with people who are like you, a phenomenon known as homophily. This happens online, and indeed the Internet can lower the costs of finding people like you. But homophily raises the question for social software designers of how much they should encourage homophily and how much they want to mix it up. Indeed, people were saying this about Usenet killfiles in the 80s and 90s.
